Washington DC

2024-2025 Oil Paint

As I wandered slowly through my favorite corner of Washington, D.C., the soft embrace of the sunset kissed the facades of the neighborhood’s timeless architecture. The golden light shimmered over the intricate details of the homes, each one unique, each one a testament to a bygone era. Dupont, with its rich tapestry of history and design, stood before me, a living canvas of the past.

Once known as Pacific Circle, this land was shaped by the hands of early settlers like the Ruffner family, their legacy quietly woven into the fabric of the city. In the wake of the Civil War, a new plan emerged, echoing the grand vision of Pierre L’Enfant, and the neighborhood was christened Dupont Circle—honoring Rear Admiral Samuel Francis Du Pont, a U.S. Naval officer during the Civil War.

By the late 19th century, Dupont had transformed into one of the city’s most fashionable enclaves, a place where the wealthiest families would build their stately mansions and elegant townhouses. The air was thick with the stories of power and prestige, as this neighborhood became home to Washington’s elite, their grand homes standing as silent witnesses to the passing of time. Each stone, each window, each curve of a stairwell, whispered the history of an age that had left its indelible mark on the city’s soul.

This series of oil paintings unfolds, capturing the soul of Dupont Circle through time. The Victorian and Beaux-Arts rowhouses rise like elegant sentinels, their ornate brickwork and decorative cornices whisper secrets of past homeowners. Tall and stately, these homes, with their bay windows and grand steps, evoke an era where craftsmanship and beauty reigned supreme. The Georgian and Colonial Revival styles emerge, with their symmetrical facades and clean lines, a nod to America’s colonial roots and the timeless elegance of simplicity.

As the 20th century unfurls, Art Deco architecture glimmers with sleek, geometric designs—modernity born in the 1920s and 30s, where elegance meets efficiency. Early Modernism also finds its place here, where minimalist forms stand tall, reflecting function and beauty in harmony. Amidst the historic grandeur, contemporary buildings break through, their glass and steel facades a striking contrast to the past. Yet even in this modernity, Dupont Circle retains its heart, where the old and the new exist in a delicate dance of history and progress. Each brushstroke captures this blend of styles, a visual symphony of architectural evolution.
